Keeping your window frame square can help unwanted visitors from entering. Window screens allow you to open the windows in your house to admit fresh air. The two main parts of a window screen are the frame, which fits inside of the window, and the window screen itself. These may be made out of a variety of materials, but the most popular are aluminum and wood. Keeping a window screen frame square is important because it keeps the screen securely in the window frame and also blocks any holes that bug or other pests can use to invade your house.
You’ll Need:
Window screen frame
Window screen
Corner pieces
Measuring tape
Hacksaw
File
Spline roller
1 Measure the screen opening. You need to measure both the width and the height. To ensure that the screen fits properly in the frame and, at the same time, gives you enough room to be able to remove the screen when needed, take 1/4 inch off both measurements. For example, if the height of your window frame is 28 inches, the frame length that you want to cut is 27 3/4 inches.
2 Cut the window frame to your measurements. Carefully mark the measurement on the frame. Use a hacksaw to cut off the unneeded portion. To help keep the window frame square, hold up the opposite ends next to each other and make sure they are the same dimensions. Take the two side pieces of the frame you have just cut, for example, and lay them side to side. If they are not the same exact measurement, trim off the ends until they are. Sand down any rough edges.
3 Use corner pieces to attach the parts of the frame together. These are small plastic pieces that fit in each of the corners. You can purchase these separately or as part of a kit.
4 Stretch the screen from the top of the frame. Insert the screen into the channel in the frame. Then press the spline in place with the spline roller. Once the top portion of the frame is complete, start laying screen on each side, a little at a time, going back and forth so that the screen is laid down evenly.
5 Clear out any debris from the window frame before installing the screens. Leaves, sticks, twigs and other debris can build up in the channels of the windows, keeping the screens off kilter.
